About My Class Web Page
On this class web page, you can find a link to the course syllabus and classroom management plan under the Student Expectations tab. The assignments tab will be a blog format, listing each day's journal question as well as posting other assignments, homework, and resources such as presentations and handouts that we used in class. Under the Assignments tabs, you can find a running calendar with the assignments that we have completed either in-class, or for homework, on the corresponding dates. Under the Useful Links Tab, you can find resources to help you conduct research in both world cultures and other subjects. Under the Internet Use tab, you find information to help you to protect your identity and stay safe on the internet!
What is History?
History is our story, the chronicle of humanity. It is everything that has EVER occurred, right up until this moment. When we study the past, we have an enormous historical record left by those who lived before us that is filled with information for us to consider.
Why Study History?
When you get to college, the question you will here most often is "What's your major?" It's a good first question to pose to your classmates. It allows you get to know a little bit about them, and is also a great conversation starter. When I would inform others that my major was history, the response I heard countless times was "That's interesting. What are you going to do with that?" I tell them that by studying history, we build skills that will be valuable no matter what job or profession we end up pursuing. When we study history, we teach ourselves to process information, categorize it, and determine what is important. We read about the past and improve our reading comprehension skills. We take the information we consume and think critically about it. We learn to make arguments, and to support our claims and beliefs with evidence. We study the past because it is the key to understanding the present. We learn about other cultures in order to expose ourselves to perspectives that may shape our own.
