Internet Safety
An important part of getting older is now learning how to harness the internet to move us forward rather than drag us down. The internet is a positive force if we are using it to obtain accurate information that enriches our lives. It we are unable to use our judgement and unwittingly believe falsehoods, the internet can mislead us.

My Tips for using the Internet so that it serves as a positive force in your life:
- Investigate your Source! This applies not only to studying history, but also to websites when browsing the internet. It is important to know about the websites and applications before you begin using them. There is plenty of misinformation on the internet, and it can be tricky to know what information to believe. Researching sources is how historians come to ascertain the truth. However, we all must use or discretion about the trustworthiness of an app or website when we are browsing the internet.
- Protect your personal information. Do not share information such as your cell phone number, home address, or current location through the internet, social networking websites, or mobile applications.
- Protect your passwords. Do not share your passwords with anyone, or store them on any public computer or other device.
- Take the CyberBully Quiz, and help stop Cyber bullying! If you wouldn't say something to a person face-to-face, you shouldn't say it to them online. Cyberbullying, like traditional bullying, can be psychologically damaging. Don't send or respond to threatening messages. Tell your parents, teachers, or the police if you receive one. Don’t send or respond to mean or insulting messages. Tell your parents if you receive one. If something happens online that makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to your parents or to a teacher at school.
- Download with discretion. Talk to your parents before you download new apps. Never download anything from a website that you don't trust. Email attachments sometimes contain viruses. Never open an attachment from someone you don’t know, or when you weren't expecting to receive an attachment.
- Use Social Media Responsibly! Use the privacy settings so that only people that you know may see what you post. For your own protection, obey the terms of service of the applications that you use.
